Hartwig E. Frimmel, who obtained his PhD in geology at the University of Vienna, is Professor and Chair of Geodynamics and Geomaterials Research at the University of Würzburg. He is also associated with the University of Cape Town where he had previously worked as associate professor. He was leader of the Earth Science subprogramme within the South African National Antarctic Programme, member of the Geoscience Scientific Standing Committee of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), member of the South African Committee for Stratigraphy, and president of SGA (Soc. Geol. Applied to Mineral Deposits). He has served and is serving on several editorial boards, as assessor for numerous national research funding agencies, on the executive committee of SGA and as consultant to mining/exploration companies. His research output includes more than 200 articles, books and book chapters in the fields of metallogeny and its links to crustal, atmospheric, and biologic evolution as well as the assembly and dispersal of Gondwana.
