I am a field geologist and Professor of Geoscience in the School of Earth and Environmental Earth Sciences at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. My current interests are focussed on establishing palaeoenvironmental settings and reconstructing depositional frameworks for two pivotal times in Earth history, the early part of the Palaeoproterozoic Era and all things Neoproterozoic. The data I generate is what would be considered ‘underpinning’, i.e. used to inform, constrain, test and refine biogeochemical models in order to gain deeper insights into how the pre-Phanerozoic Earth transitioned into the modern-day Earth system.
